We are bringing Shakespeare’s Globe to Brougham Hall, Penrith this summer, with a new production of Shakespeare’s intellectual masterpiece Hamlet. Performances take place on Saturday 18th & Sunday19th August, as part of its 2012 UK tour. Directed by the Globe’s Artistic Director Dominic Dromgoole and Bill Buckhurst, a small troupe of actors will present a stripped down version of Shakespeare’s greatest play in this beautiful open air setting, reviving the old Globe principle of outdoor playing.
A handful of players will perform a raw, thrillingly elemental production of this inexhaustible play on an Elizabethan style stage, evoking the touring tradition of the Globe’s forefathers. As Artistic Director Dominic Dromgoole explains; “The Globe was born out of a touring company culture, and that culture remained vital to it while it flourished. It was with great pride that we resurrected this tradition in summer 2007 after a 400 year break, and we are delighted to be visiting so many stunning venues again this year, including Brougham Hall.”

* * * * The Independent
"A thrilling performance for Dominic Dromgoole's wonderfully engrossing touring production ... it is intensely touching to have a Hamlet as young, unjaded and open-hearted as the one that McGuire presents to us here. The whole production has a disarming honesty".
Daily Telegraph
"A stripped down Hamlet that is fast, fresh and lucid ... Joshua McGuire is a young, touchingly vulnerable Hamlet, and delivers the soliloquies with freshness and spontaneity".
The Guardian
"This is a cut about the average piece of picnic Shakespeare, which sends up its simple, but often ingenious, two-planks-and-a-passion-style staging and is driven by a wild humour that suggests madness and laughter are close companions ... a driving, unfussy account of a great play".
Financial Times
"A slick and engaging production, cleverly tuned to outdoor touring locations".
The performances are promising to be very popular so book early to avoid disappointment. They will take place outdoors so please bring a picnic-rug or low backed seat and suitable clothing for all weather conditions. The play will go ahead in all but the most extreme weather conditions. Please do feel free to bring a picnic or enjoy the BBQ and refreshments that will be on sale at Brougham Hall.
