Join us on Monday 20th February for a special Waterstones Deansgate reading group, discussing Sinclair Lewis's novel 'It Can't Happen Here'.
Recently published in the UK by Penguin Modern Classics and noteworthy because of parallels with contemporary politics, Lewis's 1935 satirical novel saw a dramatic spike in sales within weeks of the 2016 American presidential election.
Beverly Cage in a recent New York Times review comments that:
'At a moment when instability seems to be the only constant in American politics, “It Can’t Happen Here” offers an alluring (if terrifying) certainty: It can happen here, and what comes next will be even ghastlier than you expect.'
Come along a month after Donald Trump's presidential inauguration to discuss Lewis's acclaimed work and the current climate in American politics in a respectful and convivial atmosphere.
There will be a small book club discount on any purchases made on the evening, and some light refreshments provided.
