Salford-born David Constantine short story to be adapted to feature film by award-winning director Andrew Haigh.

11th February 2014

Film Four have this week released details of a new feature film adaptation of the short story ‘In Another Country’ by award-winning Comma Press and Salford-born author, David Constantine.

The adaptation, titled 45 Years, sees Haigh taking a break from directing the hit HBO show, Looking, and once again teaming up with Tristan Goligher, producer of Haigh’s widely-acclaimed 2011 film Weekend. The leading roles will be played by Cesar honorary award-winner Charlotte Rampling and Oscar nominee Sir Thomas Courtenay. Haigh and Goligher also have a stellar team of creatives behind them, including Director of Photography Lol Crawley (who most recently worked on Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom), Production Designer Sarah Finlay (Weekend) and Sound Designer Joakim Sundstrom (Berberian Sound Studio). The story on which the film will be based, was published by Comma in Constantine’s 2005 collection, Under the Dam.

The project has the financial backing of the BFI Film Fund, Film4, and Creative England, and will be Haigh’s second Comma Press adaptation following on from 2009’s ‘Five Miles Out’, a short film based on Manchester-based Sarah Tierney's short story, featured in the Comma anthology Bracket.

Filming on 45 Years will begin in March 2014 and will be produced by Goligher’s The Bureau Film Company.

David Constantine is a poet, short story writer and translator, who over the years has garnered a wealth of recognition for his work. His short story collections include Under the Dam (2005), The Shieling (2010), the only non-US collection shortlisted for the Frank O’Connor Award that year, and his most recent title Tea at the Midland (2013), which won him the 2013 Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award, and which also features the winning story of the 2010 BBC National Short Story Award.
