Special event for young people (aged under 27) The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists by Robert Tressell is a classic novel of the British labour movement. Its themes of exploitation, workplace banter and political ideas are just as relevant today as they were when the book was written. UNISON, one of Britain’s largest trade unions, has arranged a series of free book-reading events on Merseyside where well-known figures from the worlds of entertainment, politics and trade unionism will talk about the book, its impact on their life and the wider issues it raises. Copies of the book will be freely distributed at these events, along with a booklet that points to its continuing relevance today. Dave Prentiss is one of the best-known and influential figures in the British labour movement. He has been the General Secretary of UNISON since 2001 and is currently the President of the TUC. This Ragged Trousered Philanthropists reading event will give young people (aged under 27) in the region the opportunity to meet Dave and put questions to him.. Places at these events are limited so you are advised to register in advance. To reserve your place(s) please contact Janet Meadowcroft at the UNISON Regional Centre on 0161 661 6791 or at [email protected]. Seats will be reserved until 15 minutes before each event. Seats that are not taken by that time will then be made available to those who have not pre-registered.
