This novel is set against that Battle.  It honours the sacrifice of the Merchant Seamen who died to keep Britain's lifelines open.

A boy from Liverpool finds himself in the Battle, literally by accident.  His eyes are opened to the horrors, sacrifice and courage of what went on in that cruel Ocean at that time.

We also learn of the steadfastness of the civil population of Merseyside during the 'May Blitz' of 1941 and of the devotion of the families of 'those in peril on the sea'.
